VMware AWS Migration FAQs
As an AWS Migration Competency Partner, we use several migration pathways to move your VMware workloads to AWS. They include:
- Lift and Shift: This is the fastest way to move to AWS. It enables you to move your application(s) over without any changes. The only caveat is that you may not leverage all AWS benefits.
- Replatforming: This approach enables you to optimize your application(s) without changing your core architecture(s).
- Refactoring (Rearchitecting): This approach requires you to redevelop your applications using AWS-native services. It offers the most benefits but requires more effort.
- Hybrid Approach: This approach combines VMware with AWS solutions to facilitate a gradual migration.
At TekStream, we offer the following evaluation checklist to help you decide if migrating to AWS makes sense for your organization:
- Determine Your Risk: Review your existing contracts with VMware and look for clauses that protect or provide flexibility from sudden price increases and renegotiation. Also, take inventory of your current infrastructure and workloads.
- Right Size Your Current VMware Structure: Analyze your current usage and future needs to ensure you’re taking full advantage of your VMware license.
- Engage in Conversations: Explore different perspectives with your peers, consultants and analysts to help you make the best decision for your organization today and tomorrow.
As an AWS Migration Competency Partner, we have access to several funding programs that can help you offset the costs of your VMware to AWS migration. AWS has a program (VMware Migration Accelerator) that provides customers with credits to move to the cloud. The program will be available to customers until December 31, 2024.
