Waylon Anderson: Solving Puzzles and Tackling Cyber Threats in the SOC

Meet Waylon Anderson

Waylon Anderson, a student at the University of Alabama, has spent three months in the university’s Security Operations Center (SOC) as part of his academic journey. During this time, he’s addressed 60 security events, although none were confirmed true positives. His hands-on experience in the SOC has deepened his passion for cybersecurity, particularly the detective work involved in identifying and resolving security incidents.

Discovering a Passion for Cybersecurity

Waylon, originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has always had an interest in technology and problem-solving. Growing up, he played soccer from middle school through his senior year of high school, developing his teamwork and discipline skills. In addition to his studies, Waylon has gained valuable experience through an internship as a SOC analyst in Huntsville, AL, and is currently working in the SOC at the University of Alabama while balancing a weekend job at Best Buy.

What drew Waylon to cybersecurity was the investigative nature of the work. He is fascinated by the “detective work” involved in identifying vulnerabilities and piecing together what happens within systems. Whether he’s trying to find a vulnerability or analyzing ransomware alerts, he enjoys the challenge of digging into logs and other data to solve problems.

Memorable SOC Experience

Waylon’s most memorable experiences in the SOC revolve around working on ransomware alerts. The unpredictable nature of ransomware incidents keeps him on his toes, as each case presents unique challenges. “You never really know what you’re going to look at, so every case is different,” he says. This sense of variety and the opportunity to perform detective-like work in real-time is one of the aspects he enjoys most about the job.

What He Enjoys Most

For Waylon, the most enjoyable aspect of working in the SOC is the detective work involved in understanding what happens behind the scenes of a security event. He relishes the opportunity to dig into logs, examine system data, and uncover the full story behind an incident. This investigative process is a critical skill for any cybersecurity professional, and it’s one that Waylon has honed during his time in the SOC.

Skills Learned in the SOC

In the SOC, Waylon has developed a number of technical and professional skills, including:

  • Analyzing security events and identifying key data points
  • Conducting in-depth research to piece together details from logs and event data
  • Strengthening his understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Collaborating with teammates and leadership to ensure incidents are properly handled
  • Developing a keen eye for detail, recognizing the importance of every field in an event record, no matter how small

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Waylon is seeking a SOC analyst role, ideally located in Huntsville, AL, though he is open to opportunities in nearby cities like Nashville or Atlanta. His long-term goal is to transition into a security engineer role once he has gained enough experience in the SOC. Waylon is flexible regarding work format, having worked remotely, hybrid, and fully on-site and enjoying all formats. He is available for full-time work starting in mid-to-late May 2026, depending on the role’s location.

Advice to Future Students

Waylon’s advice for students interested in cybersecurity is to push through the initial learning curve. “It’s definitely challenging at first because you have to learn a lot of new technologies and acronyms,” he says. “But once you start grasping the fundamentals, it gets easier, and you can focus more on solving problems and applying what you’ve learned.” His advice? Keep learning and don’t get discouraged—it’s all part of the journey to becoming a cybersecurity professional.
