Showrab Habib: From Software Engineer to Cybersecurity Defender in the SOC

Meet Showrab Habib

Showrab Habib, a master’s student in Cybersecurity and Networking at LSU Shreveport, will graduate in May 2026 with a 4.0 GPA. Since joining the university’s Security Operations Center (SOC), he has spent five months investigating alerts, analyzing logs, and protecting user environments. In the past two weeks alone, Showrab addressed 20 security events, including his first confirmed true positive—a moment he describes as powerful, realizing his work directly protects someone’s privacy and security.

Discovering a Passion for Cybersecurity

Showrab began his career in technology as a software engineer in 2020, where he built a strong foundation in systems, development, and analytical problem-solving. Over time, his curiosity shifted from building systems to defending them. He explains, “I realized that security is the foundation of every system—a single vulnerability can compromise everything. That motivated me to transition from simply building systems to defending them.”

From a young age, Showrab dreamed of protecting others. While joining the Army wasn’t possible, he found a new path in cybersecurity, where safeguarding data and privacy is his way of fulfilling that desire.

Memorable SOC Experience

Showrab’s most memorable SOC experience was identifying his first true positive. After a thorough investigation, he confirmed a real threat and took the appropriate action. “It was a powerful moment because it made me realize that my work directly protects someone’s privacy and security,” he recalls. For Showrab, every alert is a mini mystery, and uncovering true positives is like being a digital detective.

What He Enjoys Most

For Showrab, the investigative process is the highlight of working in the SOC. “Most alerts turn out to be benign, but each requires careful verification. When you uncover a true positive, it’s incredibly satisfying,” he says. He enjoys combining analytical thinking with real-world impact, knowing that his work directly helps protect users.

Skills Learned in the SOC

During his SOC tenure, Showrab has developed key technical and professional skills, including:

  • Analyzing authentication logs and identifying anomalous behavior patterns
  • Understanding Conditional Access and MFA behavior
  • Applying a “never trust, always verify” mindset
  • Determining context before escalating incidents

These skills have strengthened both his technical expertise and his ability to make critical decisions in high-stakes environments.

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Showrab is seeking a full-time Security Analyst role, with a strong interest in threat detection, incident response, log analysis, SIEM monitoring, and cloud security. He is open to opportunities across the U.S. and is flexible with shifts and relocation. His certifications—including CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Network+, AWS Cloud Security Foundations, ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity, and TekStream Associate Security Analyst Bronze—equip him for a variety of security challenges.

Advice to Future Students

Showrab encourages students to stay curious and always ask “why?” He emphasizes that hands-on experience is invaluable. “Build a home lab. Break things, fix them, and experiment. That’s where real learning begins,” he advises.

For students looking to gain real-world experience in cybersecurity, Showrab’s journey demonstrates that curiosity, persistence, and practical application can turn a strong technical foundation into a rewarding career defending systems and protecting data.
