David Sandoval: Turning Curiosity into Real-World Cybersecurity Experience
Meet David Sandoval
David Sandoval is a Computer Science student at Louisiana State University with a concentration in Software Engineering, graduating on May 15, 2026. Over the past year, David has been working as a SOC Analyst, gaining hands-on experience monitoring alerts and investigating potential threats in a real-world environment. During his time in the Security Operations Center (SOC), he has addressed 537 security events, identified 5 true positives, and maintained an average audit score of 3.86. Through this experience, David has built a strong foundation in cybersecurity practices and incident response. For David, working in the SOC is an opportunity to actively engage with security challenges while continuing to develop technical skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Discovering a Passion for Cybersecurity
David’s interest in cybersecurity began through academic coursework that introduced him to different areas within the field. What started as exposure through classes quickly turned into a deeper curiosity, leading him to apply for a role at TigerSOC. Once he began working in the SOC, David realized that he not only enjoyed learning about cybersecurity, but also found the investigative and problem-solving aspects more engaging than his original focus on software engineering. This shift allowed him to explore a path where he could continuously challenge himself while working on real security scenarios.
Memorable SOC Experience
One of David’s most memorable SOC experiences involved investigating a malware alert tied to a suspicious download. The executable appeared to be a launcher for the video game Call of Duty, but further analysis revealed that it was actually malicious software disguised as a legitimate file. Through careful investigation, David determined that the user had unknowingly downloaded a fake version of the launcher. This incident stood out not only because it was one of his first true positives, but also because it demonstrated how easily malicious actors can disguise threats. The experience reinforced the importance of thorough analysis and attention to detail when validating alerts.
What He Enjoys Most
David enjoys the collaborative nature of working in the SOC and the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment. Engaging directly with alerts and incidents allows him to continuously build his understanding of cybersecurity while working alongside other analysts. He values being part of a team that works together to solve security challenges and appreciates how each investigation contributes to his growth in the field.
Skills Learned in the SOC
During his time in the SOC, David has developed key skills essential for cybersecurity operations. He has learned how to analyze logs in real time, identify meaningful indicators within large sets of data, and communicate findings clearly with other analysts. He has also developed a strong attention to detail, recognizing that even small pieces of evidence can significantly impact the outcome of an investigation. These experiences have helped him build a solid foundation in both technical analysis and effective communication.
Looking Ahead
After graduating in May 2026, David plans to continue his career as a SOC Analyst, with a preference for opportunities in the Baton Rouge area and morning shifts. He is open to relocation for the right opportunity and is eager to apply the skills he has developed in the SOC to a full-time role. David will be available to begin full-time work immediately following graduation and is focused on continuing to grow within the cybersecurity field.
Advice to Future Students
David encourages students to take full advantage of opportunities to gain hands-on experience and to focus on learning as much as possible. He believes that the skills developed through real-world practice are invaluable and can be directly applied to future roles. His advice reflects a practical approach to growth—learning by doing and using each experience as a stepping stone toward a career in cybersecurity.
Every cybersecurity journey starts somewhere. For David, it began with curiosity, hands-on experience, and the opportunity to work through real security events in the SOC. If you’re ready to gain practical experience, build your skills, and take the next step toward a career in cybersecurity, now is the time to get started.
